United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) in Batavia, NY has joined the list of Baby-Friendly designated facilities! This designation recognizes that UMMC is practicing the “ Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” and are providing breastfeeding mothers with the support needed to initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

A Registered Nurse working within the center states, “As part of the Baby-Friendly initiative, all healthy newborns at UMMC have skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately following delivery and receive ongoing breastfeeding support from a registered nurse, international board certified lactation consultant, or certified lactation counselor.”

The designation is said to represent UMMC’s commitment to providing evidence-based care within their community. The title only adds to the reputation of UMMC when it comes to breastfeeding support. Back in August 2018, the medical center held their annual Global Big Latch On event to promote, support and protect breastfeeding women in public areas. The hospital also has a weekly Baby Café to support breastfeeding families.

United Memorial Medical Center is also a recipient of the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Safe Sleep Project’s Quality Improvement Award. The award was given in recognition of the hard work and dedication to improve safe sleep practices for infants.
