A New Perspective On The Lactation Counselor Training Course

Posted 5 years 4 months ago

As a doctoral student at Northwestern University, Margaret Butler is interested in the lived experiences of women regarding maternal health. As a student, Butler attended the Lactation Counselor Training Course (LCTC) to gain evidence-based, breastfeeding knowledge. Butler also sat for the Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) exam in order to build rapport with the participants in her dissertation research.

Over the next year, Butler will develop her dissertation which will focus on maternal depressive symptoms and infant feeding behaviors. Her work will build upon the growing literature investigating the role inflammation plays in postpartum depression and the potential mediating effects that breastfeeding may play in lowering the risk of postpartum depression. She plans to present a quantitative project which examines the relationship between depression, stress, and inflammation in a cohort of pregnant women from the Philippines.
