World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global celebration that recurs annually during the first week of August (8/1 – 8/7) to encourage the practice of breastfeeding for all families.

In 1990, when the Innocenti Declaration was signed, large and influential organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF committed to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. WBW is a celebration of this commitment and a celebration of breastfeeding families.

Each year, these global leaders take the opportunity to identify practices and policies that will help to enable breastfeeding. For 2019, WHO is encouraging support by the public and policymakers for paid maternity and paternity leave. Policies on maternity leave encourage paid time off for a minimum of 18 weeks (4.5 months) and policies on paternity leave encourage equal responsibility in taking care of a child among married couples. WHO is also promoting parent-friendly workspaces, with a focus on breastfeeding breaks during the workday in clean, private and safe spaces.
